The City of Melbourne has been recognised with two prestigious awards in the last week, cementing the organisation’s reputation as a leader in urban landscapes and climate change, community engagement and urban design.
The inaugural Banksia Foundation Award for Climate Change Adaptation was presented to the City of Melbourne for Council’s nationally leading efforts in building resilience to climate change and to lower Melbourne’s summer temperatures.
The award acknowledges the City of Melbourne’s investment of over $30 million in a combination of strategic and operational landscape initiatives.
These initiatives include the Urban Forest and Open Space strategies which underpin action to double Melbourne’s tree canopy cover, expand open space and the stormwater harvesting network, increase permeable pavements and undertake cutting edge research on adaptation to climate change.
This is the second significant award of 2013 for the urban landscapes climate adaptation program. On World Environment Day, the United Nations Association of Australia presented the City of Melbourne with the prize for Best Specific Environmental Initiative for Local Government in Australia, for leadership in adapting to climate change with innovative green infrastructure for the city’s urban landscapes.
The City of Melbourne’s commitment to meaningful community engagement has also been recognised by the Planning Institute of Australia at a ceremony on Friday evening, presenting the City of Melbourne with an award for the community engagement program undertaken to inform the Future Living discussion paper.
Future Living examines a best-practice approach to affordable, well-designed and diverse housing in the city. The City of Melbourne’s community engagement team launched the online Participate Melbourne website seeking feedback on the discussion paper and invited people into a pop-up lounge room to provide their views as part of a comprehensive engagement program.
City of Melbourne also received a commendation with Places Victoria for the Docklands Public Realm Plan, an urban design blueprint acknowledged by judges as ‘sophisticated… standing alongside the best of its international peers’.
City of Melbourne CEO, Dr Kathy Alexander, said that the awards were a tribute to the expertise, commitment and vision of staff.
“These awards acknowledge our staff’s commitment to achieving our vision for Melbourne to be a bold, sustainable and inspirational city. We are always seeking to innovate and lead the way.
“I’m proud of the talented and committed staff we have here at the City of Melbourne and congratulate all the people who contributed to these important pieces of work,” Dr Alexander concluded.
