Town Square and Stirling Terrace upgrade concept designs endorsed

Albany’s City Centre Revitalisation plans have passed a major milestone thanks to a unanimous Albany City Council decision.

Council voted this week to endorse the concept design plans for both the Town Square Community Space stage one and the Stirling Terrace upgrade stage one, paving the way for construction to begin in earnest. Both projects are funded by Lotterywest and the City of Albany.

Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said the projects would significantly improve civic amenity in the CBD in the long term.

The first stages of these long-term projects will be completed by the November Anzac Centenary, with further stages to be completed as funding becomes available. Early ground works have already begun.

“The Town Square will be a fantastic, comfortable, flexible and beautiful community area that I’m sure the whole of Albany will be very proud of,” Mr Wellington said.

“It will be suitable for a wide range of community events, from subsidiary Anzac Centenary events, to markets and everything in between.

“Similarly, the Stirling Terrace project will activate and beautify one of our most historic streetscapes and allow for greater engagement with the area, including al fresco dining, community events such as markets; and better pedestrian access, among other features.”

Mr Wellington said feedback from public engagement initiatives had shown the vast majority of the Albany community was very supportive of the projects.

“I thank the Albany community for its support, City of Albany staff for their unwavering dedication and professionalism, and my fellow councillors for their positivity and vision,” he said “I promise these projects will be something to be very proud of.”
