Urban Spaces to create vibrant CBD places

Turning vacant spaces into vibrant places is the aim of a new program giving emerging entrepreneurs and creative industries a boost.
Under the Urban Spaces program, Council will match newer local enterprises with vacant spaces in the Cairns CBD, to be used as pop-up retail outlets for a short-term, negotiated lease.
Enterprises with unique products or services are invited to apply for the program, which would link them with prospective landlords for short-term tenancies of up to four weeks.
"This is directed at both those within the broader creative industries and emerging businesses that would benefit from shopfront exposure," Mayor Bob Manning said.
"There is an emphasis on identifying unique business opportunities that may fill a niche within the CBD.
"We're also seeking registrations from landlords who are interested in being part of the program. The idea is that shopfront spaces that are currently vacant could be offered up at a reduced rent on a short-term basis.
"The benefits are three-fold, as the program supports local entrepreneurs by helping them to find a short-term space in which they can display, sell and promote their skills and products; enables building owners to attract a small return and promote their rental asset; and increases the attractiveness and vitality of the CBD. It really is a win-win-win."
For larger spaces, there may be the opportunity for complementary enterprises to work collaboratively. Other options include a window display using monitors to promote a product or service.
Cr Manning said the ideal outcome would be for ongoing tenancy agreements to be struck as a result of the initial short-term contact.
"We'd love to see new businesses flourish and go on to establish themselves within the CBD," he said.
