Working Party gains funding for workplace wellness

A new grant from Cancer Council NSW will assist Dubbo City Council and add to existing initiatives that aim to improve the health and wellbeing of its 300 plus staff.

Dubbo City Council's Wellness Working Party was recently successful in applying for $3000 funding from Cancer Council NSW under its Healthy Workplace Partnership project, which helps councils undertake activities to promote healthier lifestyles among staff.

It also helps improve support systems for staff who are diagnosed with cancer.

Cancer Council NSW Western Office Community Programs Coordinator Kate Maloney said 14 councils were successful in receiving grant funding.

"The workplace is an important setting for health promotion programs. Effective workplace health programs have been shown to improve the health and wellbeing of employees and facilitate organisational changes, such as reduced absenteeism and increased productivity," she said.

“The Dubbo City Council Wellness Working Party has come up with some excellent ideas for the grant and I am looking forward to working with them in educating their staff about reducing their cancer risk.”

Dubbo City Council Wellness Working Party Chairman Paul Hennock thanked Cancer Council NSW for the funding.

"The Wellness Working Party comprises seven Council staff who help develop and implement initiatives that foster healthier work environments and healthier lifestyles away from work," he said.

"This funding from Cancer Council NSW will help us implement activities aimed at reducing smoking, improving cancer support systems and promoting sun protection, healthy eating, and safer alcohol use."
