Federal funding for NT works
Remote communities in the Northern Territory are set to benefit from a $34.3 million investment to secure safe and reliable water access.
The Australian and Northern Territory Governments have partnered to improve water infrastructure in ten communities, addressing long-standing water challenges and supporting local development.
The Better Bores for Communities program will drill new bores and expand water capacity in seven communities, including Robinson River, Warruwi, and Yuelamu, while installing essential equipment to connect new water sources in Wugularr, Haasts Bluff, and Ntaria (Hermannsburg).
The Australian Government will contribute $27.8 million through the National Water Grid Fund, while the NT Government is investing $6.5 million.
Led by Power and Water Corporation, works will begin in early 2025 and are set for completion by 2027.
The program responds to critical water issues in remote areas, where shortages often limit infrastructure projects.
“Every Australian should be able to drink water from the tap, no matter where they live,” says Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek.
NT Minister for Housing Steve Edgington says water availability “is often the main obstacle to new housing and community infrastructure development”.
“This project is about more than just water supply,” according to NT Minister for Water Resources Joshua Burgoyne.
“It’s about improving liveability, promoting economic opportunities, and supporting sustainable growth.”
The project will also involve close collaboration with the Central Land Council, Northern Land Council, and Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority to ensure local engagement. The initiative is set to start this year.
