LGANT tweaks top end
The LGANT says its new Board will champion local government priorities across the Territory.
The Local Government Association of the Northern Territory (LGANT) has re-elected Darwin’s Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis, as Board President.
The election outcome was confirmed at LGANT's Annual General Meeting last week.
The LGANT Board, responsible for the organisation's governance, management, and strategic focus, aims to enhance its impact by aligning with LGANT’s core objectives.
Vatskalis says the new Board will work collaboratively with the incoming Country Liberal Party (CLP) government to pursue constructive local government reforms.
“With representatives bringing insights from remote, regional, and urban areas, the Board is well-prepared to advocate for the unique needs of all LGANT members,” said Vatskalis.
The new Board includes:
-
President: Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis, City of Darwin (re-elected)
-
Vice President - Municipal: Councillor Allison Bitar, Alice Springs Town Council
-

LGANT says the board’s mix of continuity and fresh perspectives reflects its aim to serve NT communities in urban, regional, and remote areas.
Vatskalis acknowledged outgoing members, who have completed their terms: Vice President Municipal, Mayor Matt Paterson, Alice Springs Town Council; Board Director, Regional and Shire, Councillor Georgina Macleod, Victoria Daly Regional Council; and Board Director, Regional and Shire, Councillor Cyril Tasman, Central Desert Regional Council.
“Matt, Georgina, and Cyril have all been exceptional advocates for their communities, while bringing valuable insights and experience to the oversight of LGANT. We thank them for their service and dedication, which has strengthened LGANT’s work and influence,” Vatskalis said.
The Board says it will collaborate with the Australian and Northern Territory governments, as well as other stakeholders, to secure improved outcomes for the local government sector.
“This Board is uniquely positioned to address a wide range of challenges, and we look forward to working together to achieve improved outcomes for the local government sector,” Vatskalis added.
