The NSW Independent Planning Commission has announced its new chair.

Following an exhaustive selection process, the government has chosen Andrew Mills as successor to Professor Mary O’Kane, who is stepping down to embark on a new venture as the head of the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) board.

Paul Scully, the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, has backed the appointment, noting Mills’ background in governance and extensive experience spanning four decades in senior roles across government, academia, accounting, and law.

The new leadership is anticipated to further the commission's mission of fostering integrity and public engagement in planning decisions.

Mills, who became a commissioner in early 2023 and has been a part of its risk and compliance committee since 2020, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the chair position.

His previous roles include serving as the second commissioner of taxation and being a member of the Australian Taxation Office executive.

In addition, he is involved in various leadership positions across the financial and legal sectors, including heading the Financial Reporting Council and chairing Cemeteries & Crematoria NSW.

The planning minister took the opportunity to thank Professor O’Kane for her distinguished service, noting her significant contributions to enhancing the integrity and public trust in the NSW planning system.

“She has built a high degree of trust in the planning system by continually championing integrity and public engagement,” Scully said.
