The Western Australian Local Government Minister, John Castrilli, has announced his intention to suspend the City of Canning council following an inquiry into the city’s goverancne issues.

Mr Castrili announced his intention following the tabling of the report by the Authorised Inquiry into the City of Canning, which found that there had been serious and long-term failure by the elected council in the execution of their responsibilities.

Mr Castrilli said that following the report, an inquiry panel would be appointed to inquire into Canning’s ongoing governance issues and make appropriate recommendations, including the council’s dismissal or reinstatement.

“Having carefully considered the report and its recommendations, I have formed the view that during this process it would be inappropriate for the council to continue to act as the governing body of the City of Canning,” the Minister said.

A commissioner will be appointed by the Governor to fulfil the role of the suspended council to ensure continuity of service to ratepayers and staff during the process.
