About the City Development Department
This department is part of our Planning, Design and Development Division, and is responsible for the provision of information, advice and assistance regarding municipal building services, planning permits, planning scheme amendments and rezoning.

About the Role
This position provides an opportunity for the incumbent to gain practical work experience and contribute to the planning department’s needs whilst assisting to complete their planning qualifications.

The position also provides the ability to service and facilitate the assessment and issue of material for land use and development enquiries and involves providing a professional and customer focussed advisory service.

Some of the key responsibilities in this role will include:

  1. Learning and contributing to the day to day running of the planning department requirements.
  2. Analysing and assisting with planning enquiries and applications to determine compliance with relevant legislation, including VicSmart legislation (or equivalent) applications so they are dealt with in the prescribed time limits.
  3. Assisting with the investigation and evaluation of planning applications and related documents within a team environment.
  4. Assisting with the coordination of input from internal and various government departments and the general public.
  5. Preparing correspondence in relation to Council decisions and enquiries from the public.
  6. Providing clients with a professional advisory service and assisting the public with general enquiries.
  7. Assisting with and maintaining appropriate administrative and information recording systems within the department as required.

About You
To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • Commencement or completion of tertiary qualification in Town Planning/Urban Studies or similar related field  
  • Practical knowledge and ability to interpret Town Planning legislation and practices and associated legislation.
  • Ability to set priorities and plan/organise work allocated.
  • Awareness of current trends and issues affecting town planning.
  • Demonstrated analytical, investigative, interpretative and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a professional team.
