Community invited to launch Vahland drinking fountain restoration appeal

The community is invited to attend the launch of the Vahland drinking fountain restoration appeal on Tuesday July 21, 2015 at 10am at the Bendigo Town Hall.

Next Tuesday marks 100 years since the death of William Charles Vahland, a prolific German architect that designed some of Bendigo’s most iconic buildings including the Town Hall, The Capital Theatre and Bendigo Health’s Anne Caudle Centre.

To commemorate the anniversary, the City of Greater Bendigo, together with the Bendigo Bank, National Trust of Australia (Victoria and Bendigo branches) and the German Heritage Society, is calling for donations to restore a public drinking fountain that once stood on Pall Mall to service horses, dogs and people.

Discussion to open on building height review

Cairns residents will be invited to contribute to a discussion on the future look of the Cairns city centre and North Cairns, following Council's consideration of amendments to building height and design policies within the draft Planning Scheme.

The proposed amendments follow feedback received during public consultation on the draft Planning Scheme undertaken in late 2014.

"One of the key issues raised during public consultation on the new Planning Scheme was that of building heights, with the current limits seen as a major barrier to new development and growth, particularly in the city centre," Mayor Bob Manning said.

Investment flowing into the Wyong CBD

Wyong Shire Council’s investment in revitalising the Wyong CBD is reaping rewards with key residential developments in the pipeline and major Central Coast Mariners expansion just up the road.

Council recently approved a 24 unit building and is currently discussing two further proposals that will yield 185 units – representing $50 million in investment.

Council’s Mayor Doug Eaton OAM said Council had invested substantially in the past year to improve the appeal of the town centre for both commercial and residential developers and investors and the improvements are beginning to pay off.

Latest data tells Melbourne’s economic success story

The City of Melbourne’s latest Development Activity Monitor supports the most recent data and reports from expert agencies that show Melbourne is surging on every economic indicator.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the monitor estimates that 6000 residences will be completed this year, which is more than double the annual average of 2600 since the City of Melbourne began tracking this activity in 2002.

"The figures from the latest Development Activity Monitor data reinforce that Melbourne’s economic outlook is positive: there is great confidence in our city," the Lord Mayor said.
