Randwick City celebrates NAIDOC Week
We all Stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate
As Naidoc banners fly across the City, Randwick City Council is encouraging every resident, young and old, to join the celebration in recognising the culture and significance of indigenous Australians, locally and nationally.
The national theme – We all Stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate – highlights Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' strong spiritual and cultural connection to land and sea.
Teamwork improves Pennant Hills netball complex
Hornsby Shire Council and Hills District Netball Association have worked together to significantly improve the netball complex at Pennant Hills Park.
Five of the netball courts have been reconstructed, while a concrete terrace viewing area has been created for spectators.
Council put $300,000 into the project and the association contributed $150,000, part of which was a $25,000 grant from the NSW Government.
“This is the perfect example of Council working together with a sporting group to the benefit of the entire community,” Hornsby Shire Mayor Steve Russell said.
City to Offset Car Emissions
The City of Perth has committed to plant a minimum of 85,000 trees over the next two years to offset our carbon footprint.
Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said 380,000 trees have been planted since the City of Perth Carbon Offset Tree Planting Program began in 2007.
“Over five million customers use our car parks and the planting of trees in regional WA helps offset the carbon emissions from cars travelling in and out of the city and using City of Perth Parking,” Ms Scaffidi said.
Council forecasts $7 million surplus
Initial forecasts are predicting a third successive year of significant operating surplus for Wyong Shire Council, reinforcing its position as financially stable and fit to stand alone as an independent local government area.
According to Council’s Mayor Doug Eaton OAM, there is still some work to do to confirm the final result, but forecasting indicates we will report a surplus in excess of the $5.5m recorded last year.
“We currently estimate the surplus will be at least $7m for 2014/15,” said Mayor Eaton.
