Report reveals $2.4 billion spent on shopping and food in Melbourne in 2013-14


City workers, residents, visitors and students spent $2.4 billion on retail and hospitality in the City of Melbourne in 2013-14, new research shows.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle today joined Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren to release the year one report card on the implementation of the Melbourne Retail and Hospitality Strategy 2013-2017.

“Melbourne is the world’s most liveable city and our enviable retail and hospitality industries are a major contributor to that liveability and to our flourishing economy,” the Lord Mayor said.

Salvinia Weed eradication efforts praised for reducing weed in Dogwood Creek


Recently representatives from Western Downs Regional Council, Biosecurity Queensland, and the Queensland Murray-Darling Committee (QMDC), met to discuss and re-evaluate ongoing management efforts to eradicate Salvinia weed from Dogwood Creek, Miles after dedicated work from all stakeholders has led to a significant reduction in weed.  

Council Spokesperson for Environmental Health Councillor Greg Olm has praised Council's Rural Service staff who have worked alongside QMDC Rangers, Biosecurity Officers, and the local community to achieve the substantial reduction in the weed.


Triathletes flood into the Sunshine Coast

Tomorrow’s Australian Youth Championships at Twin Waters kickstarts an action packed four days.

On Friday, a World Paratriathlon Series race will be run for the first time in our region. It will involve 57 athletes from Brazil, Italy, Japan, the USA and Australia and count towards 2016 Paralympics qualification.


Body cameras to protect City rangers


City of Sydney rangers will wear video cameras on their work vests as part of a trial aimed at recording evidence and discouraging aggressive behaviour toward them.

A team of volunteers will trial cameras in the next few months ahead of a possible roll-out to the City’s 160 rangers.

It follows a successful trial by the NSW Police Force, after it found cameras led to improved behaviour among potential offenders and provided an accurate recording of events.
