Have your say on Parap Pool Redevelopment

The community engagement for the Parap Pool Redevelopment is well underway and two sessions for the community to get involved have been announced.

Two community BBQs are taking place at the Parap Pool, the first this Sunday 1 November and the second on Saturday 7 November. Entry to the pool is free between 11.00am and 1.00pm.

Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim said the engagement process will involve everyone affected by the pool upgrade, from swimming clubs and community organisations, through to schools, nearby residents, current pool users as well as those who don’t currently use the pool.

Recycled glass lays new foundation

Glass items popped into kerbside recycling bins have quite literally become the foundation for development in Cairns.

Crushed recycled glass is being used instead of sand in various construction projects, both by Council and private industry.

“Glass accounts for around 40 per cent – or 5000 of the 13,000 tonnes – of recyclable materials collected by Council from residential kerbside bins each year,” Mayor Bob Manning said.

“Of this, only about 1000 tonnes can be recycled into new glass containers and, in the past, we’ve had to send the leftover glass to landfill.

“We now have the capability to crush glass on site down to a degree where it can be used in place of sand or even as a decorative material.”

Known as ReGlass, the product is produced at Council’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF) at Portsmith.

Broome youth the focus of new strategy

Work has begun on developing a new strategy for meeting the needs of Broome’s young people.

The Broome Youth Engagement Framework will guide the Shire of Broome’s future involvement in youth services, and the participation of young people will be a key component in its development.

The Youth Engagement Framework will be supported by a Youth Action Plan to be developed in conjunction with a Youth Advisory Council to be established in early 2016.
