Mayor aiming for record male attendance at White Ribbon Day walk

Mayor Cr Peter Cox is hoping for a record attendance of men at this year’s White Ribbon Day walk on Wednesday November 25.

He is encouraging all workers, but men in particular, to work an additional few hours over the next few weeks so they can accrue some time in lieu and attend the annual event, which aims to raise awareness among men about their role in preventing violence against women.

White Ribbon Day activities will be held at the Bendigo Town Hall from 12pm. Attendees will hear from guest speakers, former AFL player Luke Ablett and Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Tess Walsh, before walking from the Town Hall, down Bull Street, along Pall Mall, up Mitchell Street and through the Hargreaves Mall back to the Town Hall.

Cr Cox said it is important that men speak out strongly in support of this timely campaign.

School of Arts project launch

Construction will start on the redevelopment of the School of Arts building in March 2016.

Cairns Regional Council today endorsed the Project Launch for the overhaul, which includes additional space for the Cairns Museum.

The building will be extended on the Shield Street side to provide two full floors plus a mezzanine level to be utilised by the Cairns Historical Society. This new museum space will be in addition to that which the organisation has tenanted since 1980, allowing the museum to expand significantly.
