'Detox Your Home' Collects 2.5 Tonnes

‘Detox Your Home’ in Bass Coast Shire last month collected 2.5 tonnes of unwanted chemicals from households across Bass Coast and South Gippsland shires.

Forty-nine people registered for the event run by Bass Coast Shire Council and Sustainability Victoria, with 57 people in total dropping off an average of 43 kilograms of chemical waste each.

Director on the Gippsland Waste Group, Councillor Bradley Drew, said the volume collected is equal to nearly 2,500 one-litre paint tins.

“The most common products collected were paint, propane gas and flammable liquid,” Cr Drew said.

“Most importantly, 2,443 kilograms of household chemical products has been recovered for recycling and kept out of Victorian landfills.”

Council supports Fatality Free Friday

Hawkesbury City Council is promoting Fatality Free Friday throughout May – an initiative to draw community attention to the personal role we can all play in making NSW roads safer.

In support of the campaign, Transport for NSW has created six inflatable cars to display at local shopping centres, market days and sports events around the state. The inflatable cars will act as a major drawcard for the campaign and community members are encouraged to sign the cars to take the pledge.

Draft Stonnington Cycling Strategy released for community input

“We’re working toward fostering a positive cycling culture in Stonnington where cycling participation is encouraged and increased, networks and facilities are provided for, and programs and initiatives are delivered to enhance the skills of cyclists,” added Cr Stubbs.

Mayor ecstatic about Budget funding for Aquatic Centre

Mayor Cr Barry Lyons is ecstatic following news the City of Greater Bendigo will receive one of its biggest ever government grants to fund the new Greater Bendigo Indoor Aquatic Leisure and Wellbeing Centre.

“The $15M announced today in the State Budgets exceeds our wildest dreams and means we can get on with delivering this much-needed facility for our community,” Cr Lyons said.

“Without funding support from the State Government the likelihood of this project being completed anytime in the foreseeable future was extremely remote indeed.
