Twice as many Sydneysiders are riding bikes for transport than the national average, according to a new National Cycling Participation Survey.

The 2013 Australian Bicycle Council report found some 31,600 City of Sydney residents get on a bike in a typical week.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said Sydney’s growing bike network was easing traffic on congested inner-city streets and taking pressure off public transport.

“This research validates our own independent bike counts across 100 Sydney intersections, which show the number of trips by bikes have more than doubled in the past three years,” the Lord Mayor said.

The recipients of the 2013 NAIDOC SA Awards were announced today at a ceremony at the Adelaide Town Hall to celebrate the start of this year’s NAIDOC week.

The awards were presented by Ms Joyleen Thomas, Chairperson of NAIDOC SA, assisted by NAIDOC ambassadors Stephanie Gollan and Frank Lampard OAM.

“The NAIDOC SA Awards are an opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and to recognise their contributions in various fields. Congratulations to all the recipients on their well-deserved awards and for their outstanding achievements,” said Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood.

Following the awards, over 300 guests shared morning tea with the Lord Mayor and observed the raising of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flag from the balcony of the Town Hall.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the City of Perth is committed to the development of a successful and liveable capital city, for now and generations to come.

“The City of Perth is currently in a period of extraordinary growth and development, and over the next few years, several key projects will significantly alter the shape of the City.

“Our Strategic Community Plan is important because it will ensure the City is best placed to achieve its future goals,” Ms Scaffidi said.

“The City is very focussed on improvement and understands the changes are complex but we also assure stakeholders are always well considered throughout our plans.”
