Action on local effects of climate change to be shared nationally
Council noted actions from the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and upcoming participation in a new national climate change initiative for local government.
The Climate Change Adaptation Strategy was developed by the City of Greater Geelong to take into account and plan for the risks of climate change. Council adopted the Strategy in 2011.
“We’ve been a leader among local governments in the area of climate change action”, said Environment and Sustainability Portfolio Councillor Andy Richards.
Council opposes changes to mining approval process
Upper Hunter Shire Council’s Development & Environmental Services Committee has raised serious concerns with proposed changes to the system for approving mining projects and called for them to be abandoned.
The Council submission to the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure describes the proposed amendments as biased, unjust, and inconsistent with the Environmental Planning and Assessment (EPA) Act.
Councils unite in fight for local communities
NSW is in danger of going backwards and the things you love about your local area could be lost.
Keep It Local, a campaign supported by the City of Sydney along with other councils and community groups from metropolitan and regional NSW, is fighting to protect the right you and your community have to a fair say.
A series of reviews ordered by the NSW Government will create super-sized councils while also reducing their powers to protect communities from inappropriate development.
The City believes that local government is best placed to work with the community and make decisions based on local need.
